Software Keyloggers- These are by far the most common and the ones that are used by most people interested in detecting suspicious type activity on computers or smartphones of interest.  There are basically two kind that can be grouped together. The two kinds we consider basic and remote.

• Basic Keyloggers run underneath the client operating systems such as Symbian, Windows, Mac, etc. These will record the Data and keep it local on the device to be accessed at a later time.  Recording all keystrokes that have taken place.
• Remote Keyloggers run in a similar way undetected on the client device, detecting Instant messages, texting, and the text that goes along with sexting; anything that needs the keyboard to communicate.  This kind of software will copy the same information as the software mentioned above and in addition it will SEND a copy of the keystrokes to another computer where the one can read the information withought having to access the computer of interest.
• Note: Many times the better keyloggers will store the information on a websites secure section that is dedicated to only the customer.  This allows you to access the information remotely from your office, cafe or anyplace private.  These are the most secretive of Remote Software Keyloggers and some varieties are listed on this page.

Keyloggers for Cell and Mobile Phones

Hardware Keyloggers- These come in different forms and a couple different ways of use.  With these everything you need is actually in the hardware so there is no need to install any software and the data is kept on the device itself.  You can usually access the information via a special combination of keystrokes. The most stealthy of these are more difficult to install and will actually be placed “in-line” but inside the keyboard case.  This makes it almost impossible to detect.  But in general these hardware loggers are really difficult to detect.  They do not interfere with any program on the computer, so there is less chance of detection.

• PS2 In-line Keylogger- These will fit inline between the keyboard and monitor.  Using the Unique older style PS2 fittings.  These are quite easy to spot if you know what to look for.
• USB In-line Keylogger- These are also easy to spot but are becoming more and more common everyday.  Since everything almost that is produced today is USB2.0 format, these are very popular.

Acoustic Keyloggers- These keyloggers are rare indeed but very sophisticated.  They listen in to the keys on a keyboard as they are struck.  Keeping track of the frequency and patterns they also recognize that each key makes a different sound.  The information of many hundreds of keys must be sampled before an assumption of what was typed can actually be made.

Optical Keyloggers- This is referred to as a keylogger simply because it is a way of tracking keystrokes.  In truth it is more like video surveillance.  Placing a camera or hidden camera in view of the keyboard that is of interest.  This could be very complicated for many reasons, such as hiding the camera and being able to clearly see what keys are struck, especially for those that type at a very fast rate.

Keyboard Overlays- These are just a way that some criminals trick people into entering their pins at ATMS.  This is not a method of insuring parental control and safety.

Wireless Keyboard Sniffers- The keyboard sniffers are sniffers that actually are not wired in any way at all.  They can record the traffic as it passes through the air.  This method will only work if the computer of interest uses a wireless keyboard (of course.)  Also, wireless keyboards have encryption between the keyboard and computer; and for this to work the password codes have to be known.
